Visiting the Christmas Markets in Singapore

27th December 2017

I love Christmas! Literally, love it!

Being away from home over Christmas was my biggest worry where travelling was concerned. By early December I hadn’t seen much signs of Christmas and I was starting to get a bit concerned. Luckily, when I touched down in Singapore it was Christmas crazy!

Gardens by the Bay.

Gardens by the Bay are one of Singapore’s most iconic garden spaces. The area is huge, clean and perfectly cared for. You wouldn’t know you were in such a busy city. While they are incredible to look at and explore, they are also very practical. They were designed with environmental sustainability in mind. You can read more about that in detail here. It’ll make a lot more sense than if I try to explain!

What I want to talk about is wandering through Supertree Grove and stumbling across a bloody Christmas market! Apparently it was based on the markets in London’s Hyde Park, with the wooden huts and huge light structures. This, teamed with the Supertree’s which are full of flowers and lights looked pretty spectacular!

Every night at 7:45pm and 8:45pm there is a light show to music in the Gardens. In honour of the festive season the one we saw was Christmas themed. All the hits were blasted out as the colours of the Supertrees changed in time.

Ho, ho, ho!

For the big finale Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas was played and a snow machine came on!

The stalls were selling churros and raclette like they would back home, but it wasn’t quite the same. It was boiling hot and I was in denim shorts and a t-shirt. I’m used to being in 45 layers and still being cold.

After the light show there was a little lit up bandstand with a choir belting out some more Christmas tunes. It felt bizarre to feel festive but also be hot and in another country!

The Christmas Wonderland was crazy busy with both tourists and locals and was a really cute little festive evening. It certainly got me in the mood for Christmas approaching!

Although, after Singapore I headed through Malaysia and it wasn’t quite the same over there. The hostels and bars had a few lack lustre things up but they weren’t as dedicated as Singapore!

I only had a weekend in Singapore but it really did help me to get in the Christmas spirit! My actual Christmas was spent in Vietnam which I will report back on very soon!
